Chapter Eleven

“I’m going to be honest with you,” Jack said. “There’s always different sides to a story based on who was involved and what was witnessed. But something doesn’t ring true here. Help me understand how you went along with a prank like this, your boyfriend vouched for you, and then you somehow ended up being the girlfriend of the guy you screwed over?”

She started to cry then, her shoulders shaking as she tried to keep her sobs silent. I had to agree with Jack. It was hard to have any sympathy for her because as of this moment, she looked like one of the greatest and most manipulative actresses we’d ever come across. It’s not easy for a person who participated in something like that to come up smelling like roses with no consequences, unless they lied through their teeth and everyone believed them.

There was a box of Kleenex on the bookshelf and I got up and grabbed the box, setting it down in front of her.

“Tha…thank you,” she managed to say. “I know how I look, and I know you have no reason to believe me. But all I can say is that I’m sorry I participated in the prank. Kevin is—was—a sweet guy. I liked him a lot, even when he was just tutoring me. He is—was—really smart. Like, really smart. It’s just that he had this reputation because he lived in this fantasy world with all those other weirdos. But I think he was just afraid to see what the world had to offer outside of the one he made up.”

“I think he saw pretty clearly after he was humiliated in front of millions of people,” Jack said. “How’d you turn the tide and get Kevin to go out with you?”

“That’s the thing, Kevin pursued me,” she said. “Chad and I broke up a couple of weeks after the whole thing happened, right at the end of the semester. And I stayed on campus because I was taking summer classes, and it just so happened Kevin was too. I thought he hated me. He never came back to calculus after the video went viral. He got permission to do all his classes online or meeting privately with the professors. It turns out he did hate me.”

My brows rose at that bit of information. “What do you mean by that?”

“Things kind of calmed down over the summer, and Kevin started going back to class in person. The math and engineering department share a building. I was just getting out of class and he was just…there. He acted like nothing had ever happened. Like he was over it, and when I asked him about it, he said he knew I was as used by Chad as he had been and that there were no hard feelings.

“He made me feel good, especially since I’d been feeling so terrible for the past weeks. I thought, yeah, maybe I’d been as much of a victim of Chad as Kevin had been. And then I didn’t start to feel so bad.
